The Fairfax-Nielsen poll was conducted on Monday evening and asked 1016 people who the next prime minister should be.

Of those with an opinion, 37 per cent backed Mr English.

Steven Joyce was a distant second with six per cent.

Judith Collins and Paula Bennett tied with four per cent each.

No one named Jonathan Coleman as their preferred option.

The "don't knows" were the biggest group - 39 per cent.

When the poll was taken, no one had confirmed they would stand in Monday's caucus election.

Since then Mr English, Ms Collins and Dr Coleman have said they want the job.

Ms Bennett is still deciding whether to put her hand up.
