The New Zealand owners of Who Shot Thebarman are hoping it will be third time lucky for their horse in this year's Melbourne Cup, and so is Labour leader Andrew Little who has backed it for the win.

"Still waiting to see what horse I've drawn in the office sweepstake but otherwise I'll probably be backing Who Shot Thebarman as the closest to a Kiwi favourite in the race," he said on Tuesday.

But Prime Minister John Key is putting his money on the second favourite, Oceanographer.

"I'm going to play the brave thing. I don't know anything about it but it's Irish I think so I'm going to back that," he said.

Hartnell, ridden by New Zealand jockey James McDonald, is favourite to win.

Who Shot Thebarman is one of three New Zealand trained entrants, alongside Pentathlon and Rose of Virginia.
