Kiwis and foreigners flooding into Auckland for mega pop concerts by Adele, Justin Bieber, Guns N' Roses, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay this summer added almost $40 million to the economy, the city's council says.

Seven recent concerts by the artists drew in more than 126,000 people from outside the city, research commissioned by Auckland Council found.

This was equivalent to 170,420 nights in local accommodation and a $37.7m injection into the economy, the council said on Thursday.

Mayor Phil Goff said his team would aim to attract more big name acts after visitors to Auckland stadium concerts spent more than $100m in the last five years.
