NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 7/04/2016

Bharat Popli has been crowned New Zealand's domestic player of the year following his 1000-run summer for Northern Districts.

In just his third season of first class cricket, Indian-born Popli scored 1149 runs at an average of 65.78 in the Plunket Shield to win the award for 2015-16.

The 25-year-old from Tauranga is just the fourth batsman to reach four figures in a Plunket Shield season, scoring three centuries and three scores in the 90s. His 172 against Central Districts in Hamilton was a career-best tally from 33 innings.

Popli, a fluid right-hander, is third on the all-time season list behind the late Martin Crowe (1348 runs in 1986-87) and England international Graeme Hick (1228 in 1988-89).
