A beloved, yet disruptive, Dunedin resident has sadly died.

Dale, the fur seal who made headlines for sunbathing in the middle of Dunedin roads, gardens and public places, is believed to have been hit and killed by a train, Fairfax reports.

Department of Conservation Coastal Otago ranger Jim Fyfe told the outlet Dale, as he was known by local residents, had been identified because of his bad teeth.

"He didn't have good teeth to tackle fish with, hence his preference for octopus in the harbour," Mr Fyfe said.
