Gas canisters have been used by police during an armed standoff in Porirua where a man is holed up after allegedly shooting dead a police dog.

Police used the canisters, along with "other tactical options", overnight in an attempt to bring the standoff to an end.

No shots were fired as reported by other media, with the loud bangs coming from the deployment of the gas.

The standoff began when police tried to arrest Pita Rangi Te Kira for breaching bail conditions on Friday.

A single shot, believed to be a shotgun blast, killed four-year-old German Shepherd Gazza while an officer was injured when he jumped out of a second-storey window to flee the gunfire.

The officer suffered suspected fractures and is recovering in hospital. Police say Te Kira is understood to have fired the single shot that killed the dog.

An area of Porirua has been cordoned off after police located the suspected gunman and have been negotiating with him during the night. Locals have been advised to stay indoors.
