NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 5/04/2017

Severe weather causing flooding in the Waikato has left 150 children at a school camp cut off.

The Waikato District Council says it believes "there are approximately 150 children on camp at Port Waikato School."

The children were accounted for and not in immediate danger, the council said.

All roads in and out of Port Waikato are currently blocked, but there are hopes to have all the children out by Wednesday night.

The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Debbie has lashed the country on Wednesday, wreaking havoc by closing roads and causing flooding across the upper North Island.

Further rainfall of up to 120mm in the Waikato alone is expected, as well as up to 100mm in Coromandel, up to 150mm in the Bay of Plenty.
