Mental health issues are expected following the Kaikoura quake and services are preparing to cope with them, Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says.

"We know that after a serious earthquake people can start feeling stressed and anxious," he said.

"Health professionals are encouraging people who are experiencing issues to seek help sooner rather than later."

Dr Coleman says Kaikoura Health has rostered on extra nurses, doctors and mental health workers.

It is currently seeing patients free of charge.
