Power back after Bay of Plenty scrub fire

Power has been restored to all but six of 560 properties that had their power cut because of a scrub fire in Bay of Plenty.

The Fire Service was alerted about 3.30pm on Wednesday to the blaze in the Ohaaki and Te Toke areas, near Reporoa.

A spokesman says the fire, which covered an area of about four hectares, was under control and crews would be back on Thursday to deal with hot spots.

Three helicopters and about 60 firefighters battled the fire when it was at its height.

Electricity company Unison disconnected power to properties as a precaution.

"We have now restored power to all but six customers, after being given the all clear by the Fire Service," the company said in a statement.

"At this stage it appears that the damage to the network isn't too bad, so we should have the remaining six customers back on tonight."
