Power cut around Lyttelton

More than 1600 properties in Lyttelton will be without power for most of the day following a problem with lines supplying the port town and surrounding areas.

Power was cut to Lyttelton, Cass Bay, Corsair Bay, Governors Bay, Pigeon Bay and Rapaki early on Saturday morning, lines company Orion says.

The fault was in the hills above Lyttelton.

Crews were on site. Temporary repairs might need to be carried out before a more permanent fix in the coming days.

"Given the terrain, we estimate power could be out until 8pm," chief executive Rob Jamieson said.

"Getting the power back on to businesses and residents in the Lyttelton area in a safe and timely manner is our key priority."
