Power cuts hit Wellington suburbs

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 24/05/2016

Parts of Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua have suffered a power cut, which is being blamed on lightning strikes.

Wellington Electricity says power was cut to suburbs from Eastbourne through to central Lower Hutt and Taita, as well as suburbs in Wellington, Elsdon in Porirua and Upper Hutt on Wednesday morning.

Nearly 6000 customers were affected. It expected it would take two hours to restore power, it said just after 8am.

"Power is out in Petone. Cafe confusion!" tweeted Dave Keyes.

National grid operator Transpower blamed lightning hitting transmission lines.

Power was cut to Upper Hutt and Gracefield, it said.

The cuts followed a spectacular overnight thunderstorm.

Train services were not affected.
