The New Zealand under-20s have picked a burly team capable of going toe-to-toe with a bruising French pack in their Under-20 World Championship semi-final in Tbilisi on Wednesday morning (NZT).

Skipper Luke Jacobson, based in Waikato, will lead the squad from the blindside of the scrum, with Dalton Papalii returning from injury on the openside.

"From what we have seen of France, they are big and powerful, plus they have a very good No.9 and No.10 combination," coach Craig Philpott said.

"It's our first game in Tbilisi and we hope to replicate the exciting brand of footy we played in Kutaisi during the pool stages for the playoffs."

In their pool matches, the Kiwis trounced Scotland, Italy and Ireland, scoring more than 40 points in all three games.

The other semi-final sees England take on South Africa.
