Dairy is on the rebound and primary sector exports are expected to grow by 9.7 per cent next year to $41 billion, the government says.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says exports for the current year to June are expected to reach $37.5b, nearly a billion dollars up on the December forecast.

"It shows we have a strong and diversified primary sector, with forestry and horticulture continuing to do well," he said.

"It's also pleasing to see dairy on the rebound after a tough few seasons."

However, Mr Guy said this year was likely to be more challenging for the sheep meat sector because of market volatility and the UK's exchange rate fluctuations.
