The Princess Royal has cancelled her public engagements next week as she recovers from a "bad chest infection", Buckingham Palace said.

Buckingham Palace confirmed today that The Princess Royal had to have some tests at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Wednesday.

A Palace spokesman said: "She was in hospital very briefly on Wednesday but did not stay over night."

He added: "On doctors' orders she has cancelled her engagements for the coming week. She is resting privately at home."

Princess Anne was set to visit HM Prison Full Sutton in York and Strathcarron Hospice in Denny, Stirlingshire next Wednesday.

It is not clear how many appointments she has had to cancel.

The Princess Royal met veterans at commemorations in Russia last week as part of the 75th anniversary of the first Arctic Convoys.

The Convoys supported the USSR, Britain’s Second World War ally, and played a critical role in securing victory over Nazism.
