Evidence an inmate was overseeing the sale of methamphetamine from Manawatu Prison has led police to arrest six people.

Those arrested appeared in Palmerston North District Court on Wednesday facing drug supply and firearm charges.

Police executed search warrants leading to the arrests after discovering evidence the inmate was "arranging for the sale and distribution" of the drugs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison said the arrests should reassure the community that police placed a high priority on preventing methamphetamine supply.

"Methamphetamine is a harmful drug that is damaging our communities," he said.
