Pritchard works hard for second win

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/05/2016

London Olympian Alexis Pritchard has won her second round bout at the women's boxing world championships, keeping alive her hopes of qualifying for the Rio Olympics later this year.

Pritchard, who won her first fight against Moldovan Lilia Venglovscaia by a knockout, took her second bout by a 2-1 majority decision over Ayako Minowa of Japan.

The 32-year-old Aucklander needs a top-five finish to book her place in the lightweight 60kg class at Rio.

The two other New Zealanders contesting the world championships both lost their first-up bouts.

Whangarei boxer Deanne Carpenter earlier lost her 75kg middleweight class by a 2-1 majority to Argentina's Lucia Perez while Sunita Lallu lost her 45-48kg light flyweight battle with Germany's Sarah Bormann 3-0.
