Pro-riders lead NZ downhill team

A group of professional riders will lead New Zealand's challenge in the downhill events of the mountain bike world championships in Italy.

Brook Macdonald and Wyn Masters (GT Factory Racing), Ed Masters and national champion Rupert Chapman (Bergamont Hayes Factory Team), Sam Blenkinsop (Norco Factory Racing) and 2015 national champion George Brannigan (Commencal/Vallnord) are all part of a 15-strong team.

The mountain bike world championships this year have been split, with the cross-country titles to be decided in the Czech Republic next week.

The downhill will be at the famed Val di Sole course at Trentino in early September.

NZ downhill team:

Elite men - Brook Macdonald (Hawke's Bay), Eddie Masters (New Plymouth), Rupert Chapman (Canterbury), Sam Blenkinsop (Dunedin), George Brannigan (Hawke's Bay), Bryn Dickerson (Wellington), Wyn Masters (New Plymouth);

Elite women - Alanna Columb (Queenstown);

Junior men: Simon Read (Queenstown), Cole Lucas (Rotorua), Ben Karalus (Canterbury), Oscar Perks (Nelson), Billy Meaclem (Canterbury), Liam Bethell (Auckland);

Junior women: Shania Rawson (Tauranga).
