Probe to begin into Christchurch fire

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 14/07/2016

Investigators are headed to the scene of a massive fire that closed off central Christchurch.

The blaze in a multi-storey derelict building, between Tuam and Lichfield Streets, started on Thursday evening with flames seen coming out of the roof.

An investigation into how the fire started would begin on Friday morning, a Fire Service spokesman said.

Eight fire crews battled the blaze for several hours.

The building, believed to belong to RFD Investments, is about four storeys high and one of many buildings still derelict in Christchurch following the 2011 earthquake.

No one was injured in the fire which sent plumes of smoke across parts of the city.
