New Zealand's Aaron Gate will ride in the second-tier ProContinental ranks after signing with newly-formed Irish team Aqua Blue Sport.

A two-time Olympian on the track, Gate has held a Continental Tour contract four the last four years with Irish outfit AN Post-Chain Reaction.

ProContinental teams regularly compete on the elite World Tour but aren't eligible to win points.

Gate's deal for the 2017 season comes two months after finishing fourth in the team pursuit at the Rio Olympics.

The 25-year-old was part of the bronze medal-winning pursuit team at the 2012 London Olympics and was the omnium world champion in 2013.
