A punter has suffered a slight cut to his forearm after wrestling with a knife-wielding man who robbed a Petone TAB.

The man was one of two patrons who fought with the offender who had already scuffled with the TAB staffer in the Jackson Street premises on Wednesday evening, police say.

He suffered a "superficial laceration to his right forearm" before the offender left and ran out the door carrying an unknown amount of cash, Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Sears says.

"While we understand why the patrons intervened, for their own safety, we advise people not to resist a robber," he said.

"People's lives and safety are worth more than money.''

The offender was described as Caucasian, 30- to 40-years old, about 1.8 metres tall, clean shaven and wearing dark clothing.

Police are examining CCTV as part of their inquiries.
