An allegedly drunk quad bike driver faces charges over the death of a passenger.

A 23-year-old Cromwell man has been charged with careless use of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol after a passenger on a quad bike he was driving fell from the vehicle and later died, police say.

Andrew Paul Grubb, 20, of Palmerston, fell from the quad bike on Wishart Crescent in Cromwell in the early hours of September 11.

Five days later, Mr Grubb died from his injuries in Dunedin Hospital.

The 23-year-old man is due to appear in the Alexandra District Court on December 6.
