Demolition of Wellington's Reading Cinema car park looks set to begin early in the new year with equipment being moved to the site.

The larger of two cranes used to demolish the earthquake-damaged building at 61 Molesworth Street has been moved in preparation for a January 4 start date.

A smaller crane is still being used at the Molesworth Street site remains in use.

It's hoped work will begin on demolishing the Tory Street car park on Wednesday, a Wellington City Council spokeswoman told NZ Newswire.

A number of cars are still trapped inside the block after the November 14 Kaikoura quake, while a number of apartments and businesses, including the Reading Cinema, remain closed and cordoned off.

The council ordered the demolition after engineers' reports showed the damage was so significant it was not safe for anyone to enter.

It's not clear how long demolition could take, but the council spokeswoman said businesses were still being advised of a March re-entry date.
