Quake challenges Marlborough wine industry

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 29/11/2016

Government ministers are working with Marlborough wine growers as they recover from the impact of the earthquake.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce says about 20 per cent of the wine storage tanks in the region were damaged.

That could affect the 2017 harvest that starts in about 15 weeks.

Mr Joyce says he and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy have met twice with Marlborough wine representatives and they've been impressed by the response measures already taken.

"We are committed to assisting them in achieving a successful harvest," Mr Joyce said on Tuesday.

Mr Guy says issues which need urgent attention include the availability of stainless steel tanks, logistics, consenting and potential skill shortages.

"Ministry officials are working alongside the wine growers to tackle these challenges."
