The upgrading of the earthquake to 7.8 magnitude highlights the resilience of Wellington's buildings, a government official says.

"The public service occupies about 100 buildings around Wellington, and in all but two cases thus far those buildings are okay to be occupied," said MBIE's Chris Bunny.

""From a building performance point of view, it highlights the resilience that is inherent in the building stock in Wellington."

The two government buildings that have been closed for repairs are the Statistics Building and Defence Force headquarters.

A non-government building in Molesworth St has been cordoned off because it's unstable could have to be demolished, and a block of flats has been evacuated.
