An undersea earthquake measuring 5.4 has struck off the coast of the lower North Island and been felt widely around the island.

It hit 70km south of Porangahau at a depth of 30km just before 1.20pm on Tuesday, according to GeoNet.

More than 750 people reported feeling it, most between Wellington and the Hawke's Bay, although most said it felt light or weak.

The quake follows the 7.8-magnitude tremor which damaged Kaikoura and sparked a series of aftershocks up the east coast of the country.
