NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 31/08/2016

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake has struck off the East Cape, rattling residents there and felt as far south as Wellington.

The "severe" quake struck 100km northeast of Te Araroa at a depth of 25km just after 10am on Thursday, Geonet says.

More than 110 people reported feeling the shake with most saying it felt weak. Just two, in the Bay of Plenty and north of Gisborne, reported it feeling moderate.

Half a dozen people in Wellington reported it as a weak quake.
