NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 25/11/2016

Residents around the centre of the country have been given an early-morning jolt by a strong magnitude 4.6 earthquake.

Centred about 30 kilometres south-west of Wellington - in the Cook Strait - the 17km-deep tremor struck at about 3.20am and was widely felt by residents around the capital and top of the South Island.

The jolt comes amid hundreds of aftershocks following November 14's magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
