Quake rattles central NZ

A magnitude 5.1 quake centred near Kaikoura rattled central parts of the country late on Wednesday night.

The tremor. located 10km northeast of the north Canterbury town, was 16km deep and struck just after 11.20pm.

More than 2000 people reported feeling it on the GeoNet website - predominantly in Canterbury, Marlborough, Tasman and Wellington.

The aftershock comes after a destructive 7.8-magnitude quake in the area last November
