Quake shakes lower North Island

Two quakes inside an hour have rattled lower North Island residents on Thursday.

A 5.2-magnitude shake located 10km west of Masterton at a depth of 35km shortly before 8am.

The strong earthquake was felt in Wellington and across the lower North Island.

"Shaky way to start the day in the Capital today," tweeted Wellington City Council.

It came around 45 minutes after a 4.7-magnitude tremor in the same area.

No reports of damage had been received.

The shakes come a 7km-deep, 4.7 magnitude quake near Christchurch on Wednesday night and a 5.2-magnitude shake in the Bay of Plenty on Thursday morning.
