Quakes shake upper South Island

A series of earthquakes have provided and early morning wake up in the upper South Island.

Four quakes, ranging from magnitude 4.6 down to 3, were recorded as hitting the Nelson Lakes area on Thursday morning.

The strongest struck about 4.14am, 30km northeast of St Arnaud at a depth of 7km.

More than 300 people reported feeling it, mostly around Nelson and Motueka.
