Queensgate parking building needs work

More than a week after the Kaikoura earthquake, much of the lower North Island's biggest mall will remain closed while a parking building is strengthened.

Engineers say the building Lower Hutt's Queensgate Shopping Centre was damaged in last Monday's magnitude-7.8 quake and while it isn't in danger of collapsing another big shake could compromise it further.

They had recommended structural strengthening and the work has been ordered with urgency, says spokesman Rod MacKenzie.

The mall closed after the Kaikoura quake struck and it was initially believed damage was only superficial.

However, only six of 180 stores have since reopened and the mall's cinema complex remained closed on Tuesday.
