Four special housing areas have been approved in Queenstown with the potential for 490 new homes.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says they're essential because the booming tourist industry means more accommodation is needed for workers.

The SHAs will fast-track the zoning of 40 hectares for housing development.

Queenstown has severe housing shortage and affordability problems.

The government and Queenstown-Lakes District Council agreed to a housing accord in 2014 which allows the creation of SHAs.

"They enable areas to be rezoned residential in a matter of weeks," Dr Smith said.
