Olympic sailing medallist Sam Meech has quickly found his touch at the World Cup regatta in France, surging into fourth place on the second day.

Kiwi Meech won the only race in the Laser class in Hyeres on Wednesday to climb seven places.

He sits one point outside the top three and just five behind Cypriot Pavlos Kontides, who won both of the first two races on the opening day.

Meech hasn't competed internationally since clinching a bronze medal at the Rio Olympic last August.

He showed signs of rust on day one, placing 26th and sixth in the 60-strong fleet.

Compatriot Andrew McKenzie finished well down in race three, slipping from ninth to 16th overall.

The best-placed Kiwis elsewhere are Oliva Mackay and Micah Wilkinson, ranked 13th in the Nacra 17 class.
