A stormy front moving across Fiordland and Westland is expected to bring up to 120mm of rain, along with up to 8cm of snow.

The front moving slowly north over the South Island will also possibly bring thunderstorms and bursts of rainfall as heavy as 15mm to 25mm per hour, MetService has forecast.

In Fiordland, the heaviest rain is expected to ease by Monday evening while heavy falls will ease in the Westland ranges south of Otira early on Tuesday morning.

Fiordland is also expected to feel the brunt of a second front on Tuesday.

Residents and trampers should look out for slips and rapidly rising rivers and streams, MetService said.

On Tuesday afternoon, on the Milford Road, as much as 15cm to 20cm of snow is expected to fall as far down as 500 metres.

In the Lindis and Lewis passes, snow could fall to 600 metres, with up to 8cm of snow settling on the ground.
