Ram raiders have used a car to smash through the glass doors of a Waikato petrol station, police say.

Waikato District Police have posted pictures to their Facebook page showing a white Mazda Atenza abandoned in the doorway of a Mobil Service Station in Karapiro on State Highway 1.

Detective Craig Lemin said five people armed with two bats had been involved in a robbery at the station just after midnight on Monday.

He said they had driven the stolen vehicle into the building, taken tobacco and cigarettes and then fled in another stolen, yellow Mazda Atenza.

A staff member in the building had been left shaken but uninjured.

"The second car was located not long after in Tirau," Det Lemin said.

Police are appealing for witnesses as they investigate the scene.

They warned morning motorists looking for a fill-up on Monday to be aware the station was closed.

"If you work at a servo, remember your safety is paramount and if you own one keep up with your security."
