Firefighters near Auckland have been called out to rescue a woman from a "rampaging" possum in her lounge.

The Kumeu woman called 111 on Friday morning to say she had locked herself in the hallway to protect herself from the marsupial.

Firefighters turned up and found the "very tired" possum hiding in a corner, says Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jarron Phillips.

It had caused some damage to the lounge and living area, he said.

The possum was removed from the house but its fate was unclear.
