A 65-year-old woman subjected to a prolonged sexual assault in her Porirua home has told of the generosity of her community following the attack.

Rubbish collector Peter Niko, 40, was on Tuesday handed a sentence of 11-and-a-half-years in jail after pleading guilty to rape, sexual violation, abduction, aggravated wounding, threatening to kill and burglary.

Niko got into the woman's home in June by falsely telling her was upset and looking for his daughter in the early hours of June 17, prompting her to invite him in for tea.

He then bound the woman and subjected her to a four-hour sexual attack.

Following Tuesday's sentencing in the High Court at Wellington, the woman, who cannot be named, thanked her community for its ongoing support.

Groups had given her care-packages, homemade gifts and strangers had even sent her flowers, she said.

She said she had been unable to return to the house after the attack and had been taken in by family.

"I have been overwhelmed by the show of support and compassion from my Porirua community," she said.

"My daughter gained strength and felt the love of all the online comments - we read all of them with gratitude."

Detective Nicola Holroyd said the random attack had deeply affected the those living in the area.

"Hopefully the swift arrest and now sentencing of this attacker is reassuring for the community and their feeling of safety."
