Coach Simon Rea will take a full-time role with Tennis New Zealand as high performance director after six months on contract.

The former NZ Davis Cup representative and ATP player says he's been humbled by the support and encouragement he has received since he first signed on.

"It's clear there is a significant amount of work to do," he said.

"But I feel like the passion that I've witnessed first-hand in recent months can be a really good indicator that we are, collectively, up for the challenge ahead."

Rea, 34, was involved in New Zealand's 3-2 Davis Cup win over South Korea in Auckland in April, and he described the Asia-Oceania Group 1 tie as one of his prouder moments in tennis.

"I'd like that to serve as a catalyst for the values that we are wanting to stand for in a broader sense moving forward," he said.

Rea's coaching resume includes having worked with top Australian players Nick Kyrgios and Sam Stosur.

In July, he will be the New Zealand Fed Cup captain for the Asia-Oceania Group 2 tournament in Tajikistan in July.
