In his first game since undergoing wrist surgery four months ago, All Blacks captain Read played the first half of University's match against Linwood at suburban Linfield Park.

It was Read's first club appearance for nine years and provided the ideal scenario for the 31-year-old, who is expected to return to Super Rugby action with the Crusaders next week.

A modest crowd was on hand on Saturday to watch Read pack down at his specialist No.8 position. His right hand and wrist were heavily strapped but he showed no discomfort.

It is still more than two months until the All Blacks face the touring British and Irish Lions in a three-Test series starting in June.

Fitness permitting, Read will bring up his century of caps during that series.
