'Real men ride women': Max Key

"Real men ride women."

That's the message Max Key seemed to have had for a trio of cyclists he filmed while driving past them, a Snapchat video has revealed.

The short clip appears to have been filmed from the driver's seat of the car as the Prime Minister's son passed Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland on Wednesday.

John Key, who is currently in India with wife Bronagh, said Max had called him to explain and apologise for the "poor attempt at humour".

"Clearly he didn't mean to make the sort of comment that he made in the way he did but he takes full responsibility for it," he said.

"I've told him it's not appropriate, he's apologised and he's assured me he won't do it again."

The 21-year-old has also attracted criticism online since the video went public on Thursday afternoon.

Some described it as offensive to cyclists, women and the LGBTI community while one man countered "real men don't talk about it".
