Real Sociedad have moved up to fourth in Spain's La Liga standings after a 2-1 win against Espanyol.

Real Sociedad displaced Atletico Madrid and moved up to fourth in Spain's La Liga as they beat Espanyol 2-1 on Friday (Saturday AEDT).

Goals from Carlos Vela and Asier Illarramendi helped them to a deserved three points in Cornella, with Hernan Perez's tidy strike for the hosts sandwiched in between.

Vela opened the scoring in the 26th minute after controlling Inigo Martinez's through ball well and slotting home coolly.

However, the visitors' lead lasted just nine minutes, with Perez reaching Jose Manuel Reyes' pass, patiently waiting for two defenders to lunge in, before blasting the ball in at the near post.

Both goalscorers were their teams' best players, with Mexican forward Vela in particular causing Espanyol numerous problems.

Real Sociedad had been dealt an early blow when striker Willian Jose went off injured in the 10th minute after colliding with David Lopez, but Vela's attacking threat made up for it.

Illarreamendi scored in the 61st minute to send Real Sociedad ahead when he lashed home from distance after Espanyol gave the ball away.

The Catalan side stay eighth in the table although Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo can leapfrog them with good results at the weekend.
