Recalled White Ferns pair for South Africa

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/08/2016

Batswoman Sam Curtis and bowler Holly Huddleston have been recalled to the White Ferns cricket 14-strong squad for the tour of South Africa.

"They've worked hard for their recalls", said coach Haidee Tiffen of their efforts during the off season.

"Sam wasn't selected at all last summer but offers us useful top-order batting and spin-bowling value, and Holly's swing-bowling is something we see as beneficial to our goal of hitting the ground running at next year's Women's Cricket World Cup in England."

The 14 in the squad all have contracts for the 2016-17 season and the 15th contracted player, Liz Perry, missed selection because of a shoulder injury.

However, she will likely be back in the frame over the summer, Tiffen said.

The schedule of 18 one-day internationals and four Twenty20 matches before the world cup was a factor in the decision not to select Sara McGlashan, 34, and Anna Peterson, 25.

Neither player was offered a contract for 2016-17.

"With the World Cup on the horizon, we've selected both the touring squad and those to be offered annual contracts on the basis of our ODI performance in particular, and in this regard, some players have clearly been unlucky," Tiffen said.

The White Ferns will assemble for a pre-tour camp in Tauranga next month before heading to South Africa at the beginning of October, where they will play seven ODIs.

Squad: Suzie Bates (capt), Erin Bermingham, Sam Curtis, Sophie Devine, Holly Huddleston, Leigh Kasperek, Katey Martin, Thamsyn Newton, Morna Nielsen, Katie Perkins, Rachel Priest, Hannah Rowe, Amy Satterthwaite, Lea Tahuhu.
