Record number of police applications

The number of people signing up to join the New Zealand Police is at an all-time high, with applications double that of the same time last year.

A successful summer recruitment campaign is being credited and Police Minister Paula Bennett says the numbers are a promising start for a proposed increase of 1125 new police staff in the next four years.

More than 50,000 people visited the application website in January and 1351 applied to join in January and February, Ms Bennett said.

"What's most exciting is the 61 per cent increase in women who were interested in becoming new cops in January compared with the same time last year."

The Royal New Zealand Police College is currently preparing to train 220 more police each year for the next four years.
