Record season ahead for cruise ships

The ship is coming in for New Zealand ports with a record number of cruise ships set to dock this summer.

The influx includes nine ships visiting the country for the first time, the largest ship to sail to New Zealand and a vessel that will call here just a month after being officially named.

A total of 33 ships will visit the country between October and the end of April - five more than last summer.

Cruise Lines International Association's Brett Jardine says the new visitors will include the massive 167,000 tonne Ovation of the Seas and the newly-built boutique luxury liner Seabourn Encore.

Between them, all the ships will make more than 600 port calls around the country.

"New Zealand's popularity as one of the world's hottest cruise destinations will be clearly evident this summer," Mr Jardine said.

"Not only will there be more ships visiting than ever before, there will be scores of inaugural calls around the country as cruise lines extend their itineraries."
