Release boosts tuatara numbers

The release of 17 juvenile tuatara on Thursday will boost Orokonui Ecosanctuary population to 104.

The young tuatara, aged 3-4 years, were raised at the University of Otago, and will join the population of 87 at Orokonui, which was was founded in 2012.

"We recaptured more than half of the tuatara that had been released about three years earlier and they appeared healthy and well," said research assistant Scott Jarvie.
