The skeletal remains found in a car pulled from Nelson Harbour have been identified as those of Leo Lipp-Neighbours, police say.

The vehicle was pulled up from Wakefield Quay earlier this month and at the time police were "confident" it belonged to him, but his remains were identified on Wednesday.

Mr Lipp-Neighbours was 19 when he disappeared along with his vehicle on the morning of January 24, 2010.

An investigation is now underway into how the car came to be in the harbour.
