A New Zealander has been arrested in Ireland for questioning over a large-scale drug operation possibly linked to a Chinese Triad gang, according to local media.

The Irish Times reports a Serbian-born 55-year-old with New Zealand citizenship was one of three people taken in for questioning after police discovered a cannabis-growing house containing 300 plants in Fermoy, County Cork.

Police said the drugs found were worth about 250,000 euros ($NZ377,000).

Under Irish law, police can detain people suspected of drug crimes for seven days without charges.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it had seen reports of the arrest but "has not been approached for consular assistance".
