A rescue is under way in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park.

A group of an unknown number of people set off an emergency locator beacon just after 2pm on Sunday, a spokeswoman for the Rescue Co-ordination Centre of New Zealand says.

They are about 1800m up and are on the West Coast side of the main divide of the Southern Alps on the Copland Track, she says.

A helicopter was sent but cloud prevented it from landing.

Options for a ground team or another attempt using a helicopter are being considered.
