A climber with serious injuries has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital after he fell off a glacier in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park.

A Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand media spokesman said rescuers were alerted after the man, who was among a party of four, fell while climbing Mt Elie de Beaumont at around 8.40pm on Thursday and "appeared to break several bones".

A rescue helicopter tried to reach the man that night but could not get close enough because of the conditions.

A second chopper reached the man at around 8am on Friday and put down an alpine rescue team, who stabilised him before he was flown to Franz Josef and onto Christchurch.
