A pig hunter who went missing after falling 25 metres down a bank in the Taupo area has been rescued.

Police said the 35-year-old man was helicoptered to Rotorua Hospital with back and abdominal injuries after falling 25 metres down a bank at Marotiri on Tuesday.

Earlier, he called for help on a cellphone, prompting Search and Rescue and volunteers to taken on the thick bush and rough terrain of the area to find him.
